Empowering the Linden Community Since 2007

Mission: Empowering children in underserved communities by blending tradition with innovation in education, life skills, and leadership development to help them achieve their full potential.

Our Guiding Principles

Vision: To inspire a thriving Linden community where every child realizes their full potential and grows into a confident leader shaping a brighter future.

Core Values

Education as a Catalyst
We believe education is the key to breaking barriers and building bright futures.

Community-Centered Support
We are committed to uplifting families and creating lasting change in our neighborhood.

Innovation Rooted in Tradition
By combining timeless values with modern tools, we provide holistic and effective educational programs.

Equity and Opportunity
We ensure every child, regardless of their circumstances, has access to resources and opportunities to thrive.

Our Commitment

We remain steadfast in our commitment to uplift the Linden community, providing support to its residents, especially those disproportionately affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Students

The students of The Hardy Center embody the strength and spirit of Columbus’ Linden community. With 90% identifying as Black and 30% of families living below the poverty level, these children face significant challenges—but they’re rising above. Thanks to our targeted tutoring and support, 90% of our students meet or exceed grade-level proficiency. Their success is proof that with access to quality education and community investment, every child can thrive.

Our Families

The Hardy Center serves Columbus’ Linden neighborhood—home to over 72,000 residents and the highest concentration of Black families in Franklin County. Many households face deep economic hardship, with widespread reliance on public assistance and challenges like food insecurity, racial isolation, and community violence. That’s why we provide vital support: educational resources, nutritious meals, and safe spaces that help break the cycle of poverty and build a stronger, more hopeful future.

Our Beliefs

"Children in our community are rough cut gems. Each child has a value all their own. Every day we challenge them with the opportunity to be molded and polished so their true brilliance can be revealed." -Stephen Garland, Founder

Our Focus

Our programs provide educational instruction, homework help, tutoring, computer skills, life skills, nutrition education, and hot, healthy meals every operating day, at no cost to the families.

Established in 2007 as a summer lunch program serving 23 children in the Linden area, The Hardy Center has grown into a beacon of hope for the community. Located in a neighborhood where 30% of families live below the poverty level, the center provides a lifeline of support to help children and families break the cycle of poverty.

Our Story

With 90% of our students performing at or above grade level, The Hardy Center ensures that children in the underserved community of Linden have the resources, mentorship, and support needed to reach their full potential and perform on par with their suburban peers.

Today, our multifaceted initiatives, including afterschool programs and extracurricular activities, respond to the educational setbacks exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the generous support of our donors, we’ve implemented a digital learning curriculum that combines traditional practices with modern tools. This curriculum provides online study materials, tutoring, and homework assistance, helping students achieve academic excellence.

Meet the People Behind the Mission

Alongside them, local volunteers—including grandparents and longtime residents—bring a deep, personal connection that fosters trust and encouragement. Together, we create a holistic, nurturing learning environment where students can thrive.
